ABCs OF ROTARY (Cliff Dochterman)

Cliff Dochterman
RI President, 1992-93
Women in Rotary

Until 1989, the Constitution and Bylaws of Rotary International stated that Rotary club membership was for males only.  In 1978, the Rotary Club of Duarte, California, invited three women to become members.  The RI board withdrew the charter of that club for violation of the RI Constitution.

The club brought uit against RI claiming a violation of a state civil rights law which prevents discrimination of any form in business establishments or public accommodations.  The appeals court and the California Supreme Court supported the Duarte position that Rotary could not remove the club's charter merely for inducting women into the club.

The United States Supreme Court upheld the California court indicating that Rotary clubs do have a "business purpose" and are in some ways public-type organizations.  This action in 1987 allowed women to become Rotarians in any jurisdiction having similar "public accommodation" statutes.

The RI constitutional change was made at the 1989 Council on Legislation, with a vote to eliminate the "male only' provision for all of Rotary.

SPEAKER - Scilla Elworthy: Fighting with non-violence

How do you deal with a bully without becoming a thug? In this wise and soulful talk, peace activist Scilla Elworthy maps out the skills we need -- as nations and individuals -- to fight extreme force without using force in return.

To answer the question of why and how non-violence works, she evokes historical heroes -- Aung San Suu Kyi, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela -- and the personal philosophies that powered their peaceful protests. (Filmed at TEDxExeter.)

When Scilla Elworthy was 13, she sat in front of her television set watching as Soviet tanks rolled into Budapest. Immediately she started packing her bags.

"What are you doing?" her mother said. "I'm going to Budapest," she said. "They're doing something awful and I have to go."

Years later, Elworthy is a three-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee and a recipient of the Niwano Peace Prize.

In 2002 Elworthy founded Peace Direct, which supports local action against conflict, and in 1982 founded Oxford Research Group, a think-tank devoted to developing effective dialogue between nuclear weapons policy-makers and their critics. Beginning in 2005 she helped set up The Elders initiative as an adviser to Sir Richard Branson, Peter Gabriel and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
"Anger is like gasoline. If you spray it around and somebody lights a match, you've got an inferno. [But] if we can put our anger inside an engine, it can drive us forward.”
(Scilla Elworthy)

ROTARY BASICS

Rotary's Guiding Principles - Classification Principle

By assigning each member a classification based on his or her business or profession, this system ensures that the club's membership reflects the business and professional composition of its community.  The number of members holding a particular classification is limited according to the size of the club.  The goal is professional diversity, which enlivens the club's social atmosphere and provides a rich resource of occupational expertise to carry out service projects and provide club leadership.

Avenues of Service

Based on the Object of Rotary, the Avenues of Service are Rotary's philosophical cornerstone and the foundation on which club activity is based:

Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the effective functioning of the club.

Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations and to practice high ethical standards.

Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its community.

International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary's humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world understanding and peace.

New Generations Service acknowledges the positive change implemented by youth and young adults involved in leadership development activities, community and international service, and exchange programs that enrich and foster world peace and cultural understanding.   Programs include RYLA, Rotaract, Interact, and Rotary Youth Exchange.

************

WHAT IS ROTARY?

Rotary clubs participate in a broad range of humanitarian, intercultural, and educational activities designed to improve the human condition.

Rotary's humanitarian grants support club projects that provide health care and medical supplies, clean water, food, job training, youth development, and education to millions of people in need, particularly in the developing world.

ABCs OF ROTARY (Cliff Dochterman)

The sponsor of a new member

Cliff Dochterman
RI President, 1992-93
The bylaws of Rotary clearly outline the procedure for a prospective member to be proposed for Rotary club membership.  The "proposer" is the key person in the growth and advancement of Rotary.  Without a sponsor, an individual will never have the opportunity to become a Rotarian.

The task of the proposer should not end merely by submitting a name to the club secretary or membership committee.  Rotary has not established formal responsibilities for proposers or sponsors; however, by custom and tradition these procedures are recommended in many clubs.  The sponsor should:

  • Invite a prospective member to several meetings prior to proposing the individual for membership.
  • Accompany the prospective new member to one or more orientation/informational meetings.
  • Introduce the new member to other club members each week for the first month.
  • Invite the new member to accompany the sponsor to neighbouring clubs for the first make-up meeting to learn the process and observe the spirit of fellowship.
  • Ask the new member and spouse to accompany the sponsor to the club's social activities, dinners, or other special occasions.
  • Urge the new member and spouse to attend the district conference with the sponsor.
  • Serve as a special friend to assure that the new member becomes an active Rotarian.
When the proposer follows these guidelines, Rotary becomes stronger with each new member.

ROTARY BASICS

Rotary's Guiding Principles

Throughout Rotary's history, several basic principles have been developed to guide Rotarians in achieving the ideal of service and high ethical standards.

Object of Rotary - First formulated in 1910, and adapted through the years as Rotary's mission expanded, the Object of Rotary provides a succinct definition of the organization's purpose as well as the club member's responsibilities.

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST.  The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.

SECOND.  High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD.  The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH.  The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

************

WHAT IS ROTARY?

Over 32,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas initiate service projects to address today's challenges, including illiteracy, disease, hunger, poverty, lack of clean water, and environmental concerns.

SECOND SPEAKER - from Kingston, Jamaica - Dr. Ernest Madu on World Class Health Care

Dr. Ernest Madu runs the Heart Institute of the Caribbean in Kingston, Jamaica, where he proves that -- with careful design, smart technical choices, and a true desire to serve -- it's possible to offer world-class healthcare in the developing world.

Ernest Madu founded the Heart Institute of the Caribbean, a revolutionary clinic for cardiovascular diseases in Kingston, Jamaica -- revolutionary for offering first-class health care in a developing nation. His next stop: Nigeria.

Dr. Ernest Chijioke Madu believes that people in the developing world have a right to world-class health care. At his three Heart Institute of the Caribbean clinics --in Kingston and Mandeville, Jamaica, and in the Cayman Islands -- he delivers more than $1 million a year in free or reduced-care treatment, a significant contribution in an area where 56% of hospital deaths are caused by cardiovascular disease.

Now Dr. Madu is hoping to transfer HIC's mission and achievements into other low-resource nations. His next target is Nigeria, his home country, where the Heart Institute of West Africa is scheduled to open in 2009. Though AIDS and malaria are huge factors for Africa, Dr. Madu emphasizes the importance of treating cardiovascular disease, which is the second leading cause of death in sub-Saharan Africa, after HIV/AIDS, and the leading cause of death for people over 30.

Dr. Madu's work on noninvasive evaluation of coronary artery disease in obese individuals has become a standard evaluating tool.
"Dr. Madu has shown that in an interconnected world, technology, expertise and the human (I’d say Nigerian spirit) spirit can support make the seemingly impossible, possible."   --

Chikwe Ihekweazu, at Nigeria Health Watch

ABCs OF ROTARY (Cliff Dochterman)

RI World Headquarters

Cliff Dochterman
RI President, 1992-93

The headquarters of Rotary International has always been in the area of Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A.  First it was in Chicago itself, but in 1954, an attractive new building opened in suburban Evanston.  The Ridge Avenue building met the needs of the Rotary Secretariat until the 1980s when the addition of new programs, the growth of The Rotary Foundation, and the new PolioPlus activities made the headquarters building extremely crowded and required some staff members to be housed in supplementary office space nearby.

When a modern 18-storey office building became available in downtown Evanston in 1987, it appeared to meet all of Rotary's space3 and expansion needs for years to come.  The glass and steel structure, built in 1977, provides 400,000 square feet of office and usable space.  The building was purchased by Rotary International, which leases approximately two-thirds of the space to commercial tenants, until needed by future Rotary growth.

The building provides a 190-seat auditorium, large parking garage and 300-seat cafeteria, as well as functional office space for the 400 employees of the World Headquarters.  The executive suite on the 18th floor includes conference rooms for the RI board and committee meetings, in addition to the offices for the RI president, president-elect, and general secretary.

One Rotary Center, as it is called, will enhance the efficient operations of Rotary International for many years to come.

ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE

As we look forward to January where the celebration within Rotary is Rotary Awareness, we should consider Youth Exchange.

A s a Rotary Youth Exchange student, you’ll spend up to a year living with host families and attending school in a different country.

Whether you participate in Rotary’s long-term or short-term Youth Exchange programs, you’ll learn a new way of living, a great deal about yourself, and maybe even a new language. You’ll also be an ambassador, teaching people you meet about your country, culture, and ideas. You can help bring the world closer – and make some good friends in the process.

For over 75 years, students and host families have broadened their horizons through Rotary Youth Exchange. More than 80 countries and over 8,000 students each year participate in the program, which is administered at the regional level by Rotary districts and at the local level by Rotary clubs.

MAIN SPEAKER - Alanna Shaikh

(This video is about 6 1/2 minutes.)

When faced with a parent suffering from Alzheimer's, most of us respond with denial ("It won't happen to me") or extreme efforts at prevention. But global health expert and TED Fellow Alanna Shaikh sees it differently. She's taking three concrete steps to prepare for the moment -- should it arrive -- when she herself gets Alzheimer's disease.

Alanna Shaikh is especially interested in Alzheimer's, as she has watched her father deteriorate from the disease over the past 12 years. But she says the experience has not sent her into denial—she plans to be prepared for the genetically transmitted disease, should it ever arrive.
"I need a heart so pure that if it is stripped bare by dementia, it will survive." (Alanna Shaikh)
