Official Directory

How do you find out when the Rotary club meets in Toowoomba, Pondicherry or Recklinghausen?  Simply turn to the Official Directory of Rotary International.  The approximately 750-page annual publication is filled with current information about Rotarians and Rotary clubs.  The meeting, day, time, and location of every one of the more than 33,000 clubs are listed.

Now, you can go to rotary.org and find the Club LocatorYou can also download an app for your mobile phone from the same website.

Opportunities for Fellowship

Most Rotarians are successful professional and business executives because they hear opportunities knock and take advantage of them.  Once a week, the opportunityh for Rotary fellowship occurs at each club meeting, but not all members hear it knocking.

The weekly club meeting is a special privilege of Rotary membership.  It provides the occasion to visit with fellow members, to meet visitors you have not known before, and to share your personal friendship with other members.

Rotary clubs which have a reputation of being "friendly clubs" usually follow a few simple steps:

First, members are encouraged to sit in a different seat or at a different table each week.

Second, Rotarians are urged to sit with a member they may not know as well as their long-time personal friends.

Third, members invite new members or visitors to join their table just by saying:  "Come join us, we have an empty chair at this table."

Fourth, members share the conversation around the table rather than merely eating in silence or talking privately to the person next to them.

Fifth, Rotarians make a special point of trying to get acquainted with all members of the club by seeking out those they may not know.

When Rotarians follow these five easy steps, an entirely new opportunity for fellowship knocks each week.  Soon Rotarians realize that warm and personal friendship is the cornerstone of every great Rotary club.

SPEAKER 2 - NATURAL PEST CONTROL - USING BUGS

Shimon Steinberg looks at the difference between pests and bugs -- and makes the case for using good bugs to fight bad bugs, avoiding chemicals in our quest for perfect produce.

Shimon Steinberg's biotech lab researches ways to harness the natural benefits of insects on a massive scale.

Shimon Steinberg is chief scientist at Bio-Bee, a world leader in mass production of the world's best natural, biological control agents: bugs. (Beneficial bugs are replacing the use of chemical sprays in greenhouse vegetables and open field crops, producing pesticide-free food and eliminating hazardous exposure of millions of workers in third world countries.) These insects are shipped worldwide, where they go to work protecting thousands of hectares of greenhouses and open fields, in vegetables, field crops, fruit trees, ornamental plants and more.
"My dream is to narrow the gap even more by finding more robust and reliable good bugs we can mass produce or conserve in the field, as well as create more public demand for natural pest control and increase awareness among growers."

ROTARY E-CLUB GOALS

When Rotary E-Club One received its charter on 4 January 2002, the Board of Directors of RI prescribed 5 key goals, all of which now apply to every Rotary e-club:

1. Use the Internet to retain Rotarians who would otherwise be lost to Rotary.
2. Use the Internet to attract new Rotarians.
3. Use the Internet to facilitate meetings.
4. Use the Internet to manage service projects.
5. Use the Internet for fellowship by creating a friendly community of like-minded Rotarians.

Invocations at Club Meetings

In many Rotary clubs, particularly in Judeo-Christian nations, it is customary to open weekly meetings with an appropriate invocation or blessing.  Usually such invocations are offered without reference to specific religious denominations or faiths.

Rotary policy recognizes that throughout the world Rotarians represent many religious beliefs, ideas, and creeds.  The religious beliefs of each members are fully respected, and nothing in Rotary is intended to prevent each individual from being faithful to such convictions.

At international assemblies and conventions, it is traditional for a silent invocation to be given.  In respect for all religious beliefs and in the spirit of tolerance for a wide variety of personal faiths, all persons are invited to seek divine guidance and peace "each in his own way."  It is an inspiring experience to join with thousands of Rotarians in an international "silent prayer" or act of personal devotion.  Usually all Rotary International board and committee meetings begin with a few moments of silent meditation.  In this period of silence, Rotary demonstrates respect for the belies of all members, who represent the religions of the world.

Since each Rotary club is autonomous, the practice of presenting a prayer or invocation at club meetings is left entirely to the traditions and customs of the individual club, with the understanding that these meeting rituals always be conducted in a manner which will respect the religious convictions and faiths of all members.

WORLD WATER DAY - March 22

Wilfrid J. Wilkinson
The World Health Organization estimates that almost one-tenth of global diseases could be prevented by improving the water supply, sanitation, hygiene, and the management of water resources.

The citizens of Patari, a village in Uttar Pradesh, are among 25 million people in India alone who suffer the consequences of fluorosis, an irreversible condition caused by elevated levels of fluoride in drinking water. The painful effects of fluorosis can include bone deformities, calcification of ligaments and tendons, and abnormal bone density.

“The fluoride, because of its strength, rots teeth and destroys bones,” says Maurice Halliday, past governor of District 1020 (Scotland). Rotary clubs in Scotland partnered with District 3110 (India) to provide fluoride filters to 60 families in Patari and sanitation, safe drinking water and hygiene training to surrounding schools.

The Rotary Foundation leverages local experience and professional know-how to help communities, like Patari, help themselves.

In honor of World Water Day, I invite you to consider a special gift to The Rotary Foundation to help address the unique water and sanitation needs of communities across the globe.

You can direct your Annual Fund gift to SHARE, to help support the local and international activities identified by Rotary clubs in your community.

Or, you can direct your gift to Rotary’s Water and Sanitation fund, to be spent on quality water and sanitation projects identified and implemented by Rotarians around the world.

Either way, your contribution will be used to fund high impact, sustainable solutions to our world’s most pressing needs

SPEAKER -
Dragonflies that cross the ocean

While living and working as a marine biologist in Maldives, Charles Anderson noticed sudden explosions of dragonflies at certain times of year. He explains how he carefully tracked the path of a plain, little dragonfly called the globe skimmer, only to discover that it had the longest migratory journey of any insect in the world.

Charles Anderson studies marine life in the Maldives, a nation of coral atolls in the Indian ocean.

Since 1983, Charles Anderson has lived and worked in the Maldives, a group of more than 1,000 coral islands that is the world's lowest-lying country. Marine life here is rich and fascinating, and Anderson has been instrumental in identifying it and promoting its preservation. This year, the Maldives became the first nation to ban shark fishing, after recognizing that the decline in live sharks was impacting the lucrative tourist trade.

Anderson has discovered several new species of fish, and was awarded the President of Maldives Award for Service to Fisheries in 1995, the only non-Maldivian ever to receive this honor.

He and his wife, Susan, run several whale-watching trips each year where tourists take part in a national survey of cetaceans (whales and dolphins). Recently, Anderson has identified the world's longest insect migration: the 18,000 km flight of tiny Pantala flavescens dragonflies back and forth across the Indian Ocean. He has found that the migration begins in India and proceeds via the Maldives (a mystifying stopover, because freshwater is scarce on these low-lying atolls) and the Seychelles -- and then all the way to East Africa.
"It may seem remarkable that such a massive [dragonfly] migration has gone unnoticed until now. But this just illustrates how little we still know about the natural world."
Charles Anderson, BBC News

ABCs OF ROTARY (Cliff Dochterman)

Cliff Dochterman
RI President, 1992-93
Vocational Service

Occasionally, there is a temptation to criticize the laws, customs and traditions of another country which may seem strange or contrary to our own.  In some instances, illegal practices or customs of one nation are completely lawful and acceptable in another.

As members of an international organization dedicated to world understnading and peace, it behooves Rotarians to exercise restraint in judging our Rotary friends and citizens from other countries when their behaviour seems unusual to us.  A Rotary policy has existed for more than half a century relating to this dilemma of international relationships.

The statement, adopted in 1933, says that because it is recognized that some activities and local customs may be legal and customary in some countries and not in others, Rotarians should be guided by this admonition of tolerance:

"Rotarians in all countries should recognize these facts and there should be a thoughtful avoidance of criticism of the laws and customs of one country by the Rotarians of another country."
The policy also cautions against "any effort on the part of Rotarians of one country to interfere with the laws or customs of another country."

As we strive to strengthen the bonds of understanding, goodwill and friendship, these policies still provide good advice and guidance.

ROTARY - A PRIORITY

Membership in Other Organizations

In order to comply with the obligations of membership in a Rotary club, a Rotarian should not belong to similar community or service clubs that would substantially reduce the member’s opportunity to comply with the obligations of membership.

A person being considered for membership in a Rotary club should be expected to disclose membership in other service organizations.

Rotarians who wish to join a similar community or service organization should seek prior approval from the Rotary club board of directors. (RCP 4.020.)

Rotarians are members of the Rotary Club.  Rotary Clubs are members of Rotary International.

************

From Ron Burton - RI President - elect (2013-14)

We need to make sure that all Rotarians have a meaningful role to play, that they’re all making a contribution, and that their contributions are valued.
Because when that happens, the members who come in the front door don’t go right out the back.

They stay in Rotary, they become Rotarians, they bring in new members, and they make a difference.

The job of membership isn’t done when we bring in a new member.

It’s not done until that new member is engaged in Rotary, is inspired by Rotary, and uses the power of Rotary service to change lives.

ROTARY HISTORY

Rotary Anns

In many Rotary clubs throughout the world, wives of male members are called "Rotary Anns."  This designation was never one of disparagement, but rather grew out of an interesting historical occasion.

The year was 1914 when San Francisco Rotarians boarded a special train to attend the Rotary convention being held in Houston.  In those days, few wives attended Rotary events, and until the train stopped in Los Angeles, the only woman aboard was the wife of Rotarian Bru Brunnier.  As the train picked up additional convention-bound delegates, Mrs. Ann Brunnier was introduced as the Rotarian's Ann.  This title soon became "Rotary Ann."

Since the clubs of the West were inviting the Rotarians to hold their next convention in San Francisco, a number of songs and stunts were organized which would be performed in Houston.  One of the Rotarians wrote a "Rotary Ann" chant.  On theh train's arrival at the Houston depot, a delegation greeted the West Coast Rotarians.

One of the greeters was Guy Gundaker of Philadelphia, whose wife was also named Ann.
During the demonstration, someone started the Rotary Ann chant.  The two petite ladies, Ann Brunnier and Ann Gundaker, were hoisted to the men's shoulders and paraded about the hall.  The group loved the title given to the two women named Ann.  Immediately the same term of endearment was used for all of the wives in attendance, and the name "Rotary Ann" was here to stay.

Guy Gundaker became president of Rotary International in 1923 and Bru Brunnier was elected president in 1952.  Thus, each of the two original Rotary Anns became the "first lady of Rotary International."

SPEAKER - Suspend your belief

Like your uncle at a family party, the rumpled Swedish doctor Lennart Green says, "Pick a card, any card." But what he does with those cards is pure magic -- flabbergasting, lightning-fast, how-does-he-do-it? magic.

Cards that fly all over the table, spill onto the floor, and disappear beneath a laser beam. Welcome to the chaotic and flabbergasting magical world of Lennart Green, grand master of close-up card trickery!

Why you should listen to him:

Swedish card trick maestro Lennart Green has been baffling audiences for years with card tricks that seem barely under control. In 1991 he won the grand prize in close-up card magic from the International Federation of Magic Societies (FISM), sometimes called the "Olympics of magic." He might've won it in 1985 also, except his act of seemingly impossible cardplay fooled even the judges.

With his DVD series Green Magic, Green not only showcases his stunning routines, but divulges many of his most closely guarded secrets, including his famous "Snap Deal" (where cards seem to vanish without a trace as they are dealt). His talents have carried his trickery around the world, including an appearance on NBC's The World's Greatest Magic.
"One cardman who delivered a terrific performance in the contest was Lennart Green, a Swedish physician with an utterly original repertoire. He did not place, because some of the judges, completely fooled by his bizarre methods, jumped to the incorrect conclusion that the spectators who had shuffled the cards during his routine were actually stooges."

 ROTARY BASICS

Unusual Make-up Meetings

Which Rotarians have to travel farthest for a make-up meeting?

You are right, if you guessed the 34 members of the Rotary Club of Papeete, Tahiti, which is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and is the club that is most remote from any other.

The southernmost Rotary meeting is that of the Rotary CLub of Punta Arenas, Chile, on the tip of South American.  To visit the northernmost club, you must travel above the Arctic Circle to the Rotary Club of Nordkapp, Norway.

If you attend the El Aguilar club in Argentina, you are meeting with the highest club in the world at 16,000 feet (4,880 meters) above sea level.  The lowest club meets at 40 feet below sea level at El Centro, California, U.S.A.

It is said that there is a Rotary meeting being held someplace in the world every hour of every day of the year.  If you attended one meeting per day, it would take 75 years to visit all of the more than 33,000 Rotary clubs in the world, and by that time, no doubt, there would be thousands more new clubs to attend.

1.  Is it the TRUTH?
2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3.  Will it BUILD GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
