THE ABCs OF ROTARY  (by Cliff Dochterman)
Cliff Dochterman
RI President, 1992-93

The Official Rotary Flag

An official flag was formally adopted by Rotary International at the 1929 Convention in Dallas, Texas.  The Rotary flag consists of a white field with the official wheel emblem emblazoned in gold in the center of the field.

The four depressed spaces on the rim of the Rotary wheel are colored royal blue.  The words "Rotary" and "International" printed at the top and bottom depressions on the wheel rim are also gold.  The shaft in the hub and the keyway of the wheel are white.

The first official Rotary flag reportedly was flown in Kansas City, Missouri, in January 1915.  In 1922, a small Rotary flag was carried over the South Pole by Admiral Richard Byrd, a member of the Winchester, Virginia, Rotary Club.  Four years later, the admiral carried a Rotary flag in his expedition to the North Pole.

Some Rotary clubs use the official Rotary flag as a banner at club meetings.  In these instances, it is appropriate to print the words "Rotary Club" above the wheel symbol, and the name of the city, state, or nation below the emblem.

The Rotary flag is always prominently displayed at the World Headquarters as well as all conventions and official events of Rotary International.

A LITTLE MORE ABOUT CLIFF DOCHTERMAN

A short video that provides more about former Rotary International President, Cliff Dochterman.

Real happiness is helping others.   When people reach out and touch the lives of other people, so much more comes back into your own.
-- Cliff Dochterman

We can discuss this at our Happy Hour Hangout on Wednesday.

THE FIRST SPEAKER

The topic for this week's meeting is a very interesting one - How I taught rats to sniff out land mines.  It sounds a bit odd, but I believe you will find it very interesting and educational.

A passion for rodents and a passion for Africa!!

Click this link for the video.

QUESTION - Does this idea challenge your perception of the resources surrounding you?

Paul Harris said -
I would like to think that the pioneering days of Rotary has only just  begun.  There are just as many new things to be done as ever there were.
Kaleidoscopic changes area taking place, many of them without our will.  Even to hang on to the fringe of this fast-changing world is about all most of us can do.

Rotary simply must continue to pioneer or be left in the rear of progress.

-- The Rotarian, February 1945

(And does this apply to the advent of the E-club?)

TEXTING TO SAVE LIVES

A 5-minute video here on a very topical subject - Texting to save lives.

When Nancy Lublin started texting teenagers to help with her social advocacy organization, what she found was shocking.  They started texting her back about their own problems, from bullying to depression to abuse.

So, Nancy is setting a text-only crisis line, and the results might  be even more important than expected.

Nancy is CEO and chief Old Person at DoSomething.org, where she harnesses the extraordinary energy of teens and focuses it on issues they care passionately about.

DoSomething.org is the largest organization in America for young people and social change.

Nancy is deeply passionate about Do Something, and the activist mission behind the organization.

"The parents in the room know that texting is actually the best way to communicate with your kids.  It might be the only way to communicate with your kids."
