THE ABCs OF ROTARY  (by Cliff Dochterman)
Cliff Dochterman
RI President, 1992-93

Definition of Rotary

How do you describe the organization called "Rotary"?

There are so many characteristics of a Rotary club as well as the activities of a million Rotarians.  There are the features of service, internationality, fellowship, classifications of each vocation, development of goodwill and world understanding, the emphasis of high ethical standards, concern for other people and many more descriptive qualities.

In 1976, the Rotary International Board of Directors was interested in creating a concise definition of the fundamental aspects of Rotary.  They turned to the three men who were then serving on Rotary's Public Relations Committee and requested that a one-sentence definition of Rotary be prepared.  After numerous drafts, the committee presented this definition, which has been used ever since in various Rotary publications:

"Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world."
Those 31 words are worth remembering when someone asks, "What is a Rotary club?"

THE SPEAKER - David Damberger - Learning from Failure

International aid groups make the same mistakes over and over again. David Damberger uses his own engineering failure in India to call for the development sector to publicly admit, analyze, and learn from their missteps.

David got his start with Engineers without Borders when he founded the organization's Calgary Chapter.  He then worked for four years as the Engineers without Border's director of southern African programs, consulting with governments and NGOs on agriculture, sanitation, and development.

In 2009, he co-founded Ethical Ocean, an online retail company focused on ethical and fair-trade goods.

Questions for Discussion concerning the video:

  • Does this have an impact for Rotary?
  • What does this tell us about what we need to consider for International Projects?
  • Do we need to have a discussion on Failure?  Please comment thoughtfully.
  • How does Rotary think about, and share, failure?

Paul Harris said -
If there were within my power to live again my boyhood days, and if I could shape things to suit myself, one of the first things I would do would be to bring about a better understanding between myself and the grown-ups around me.
There would be little trouble between people if everyone understood everyone else; and every man certainly ought to get the boy viewpoint as far as he possibly can in order to be of real help to the boy.
-- Message to a boys' group in Huntington Park, California, USA

JOKE OF THE WEEK -

A woman walks into the optometry store to return a pair of glasses she had purchased the week before.
"What seems to be the problem, ma'am?"  the optometrist inquired.
"Well, I bought these glasses for my husband last week, and they're just not working," the woman complained.
"Perhaps the lab made an error filling the prescription."
"I'm sure they must have," the woman confirmed.  "My husband's still not seeing things my way."
