THE ABCs OF ROTARY  (by Cliff Dochterman)

The 4-Way Test

Cliff Dochterman
RI President, 1992-93
One of the most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics in the world is the Rotary "4-Way Test."  It was created by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor in 1932 when he was asked to take charge of the Chicago-based Club Aluminum Company, which was facing bankruptcy.

Taylor looked for a way to save the struggling company mired in depression-caused financial difficulties.  He drew up a 24-word code of ethics for all employees to follow in their business and professional lives.  The 4-Way Test became the guide for sales, production, advertising and all relations with dealers and customers, and the survival of the company was credited to this simple philosophy.

Herb Taylor became president of Rotary International during 1954-55.  The 4-Way Test was adopted by Rotary in 1943 and has been translated into more than 100 languages and published in thousands of ways.  The message should be known and followed by all Rotarians.

"Of the things we think, say or do:

1.  Is it the TRUTH?
2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3.  Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

WORLD DIABETES DAY - November 14

This year, 2012, marks the 91st anniversary of the discovery of insulin!!

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) is an umbrella organization of over 200 national diabetes associations in over 160 countries.  It represents the interests of the growing number of people with diabetes and those at risk.

The IDF has been leading the global diabetes communities since 1950.  (Source:  www.idf.org)

There are many risk factors for Type 2 Diabetes: (from http://www.idf.org/worlddiabetesday)

  • Obesity and overweight
  • Lack of exercise
  • Previously identified glucose intolerance
  • Unhealthy diet
  • Increased age
  • High blood pressure and high cholesterol
  • A family history of Diabetes
  • A history of gestational Diabetes
  • Ethnicity - higher reported rates of Diabetes have been reported in Asians, Hispanics, Indigenous peoples (USA, Canada, Australia) and African Americans

At present, Type 1 Diabetes cannot be prevented.  The environmental triggers that are thought to generate the process that results in destruction of the body's insulin-producing cells are still under investigation.

Type 2 Diabetes, however, can be prevented in many cases by maintaining a healthy weight and being physically active.  Studies in China, Finland, and the United States have confirmed this.

OUR MAIN SPEAKER - A Must-see!!

Teach every child about food

In view of the emphasis this month on Diabetes, Jamie Oliver's talk this week is very appropriate.  You CAN prevent Diabetes and live a happy and healthy life with a healthy diet.

Jamie Oliver has been drawn to the kitchen since he was a child working in his father's pub/restaurant.  He showed now only a precocious culinary talent but also a passion for creating (and talking about) fresh, honest, delicious food.

In the past decade, the shaggy-haired "Naked Chef" of late-90s BBC2 has built a world-wide media conglomerate of TV shows, books, cookware, and magazines, all based on a formula of simple, unpretentious food that invites everyone to get busy in the kitchen.

And as much as his cooking is generous, so is his business model - his Fifteen Foundation, for instance, trains young chefs from challenged backgrounds, to run four of his restaurants.

Now, Oliver is using his fame and charm to bring attention to the changes that Brits and Americans need to make in their lifestyles and diet.  Campaigns such as Jamie's School Dinner, Ministry of Food, and Food Revolution USA combine Oliver's culinary tools, cookbooks and television, with serious activism and community organizing - to create change on both the individual and government level.

Here is an excellent video of Jamie Oliver (about 20 minutes):

"Your child will live a life 10 years younger than you because of the landscape of food we've built around them."  (Jamie Oliver)

Please click this link to view the video.   (Click your browser`s BACK button to return to the meeting.)
"Teach every child about food."
"I wish for everyone to help create a strong, sustainable movement to educate every child about food, inspire families to cook again, and empower people everywhere to fight obesity."  (Jamie Oliver)

Please comment thoughtfully about this speaker in your review of our meeting.
  • How does this relate to your home country?  to the Caribbean?  to our Rotary E-club?
  • Could our E-club put together a cook book of "life skills" for children?  10 recipes that could change their lives?
  • Could we relate this topic to a health issue, like Diabetes?

Paul Harris said -
Those who have Rotary's interests at heart trust that we may always continue to view it and its children, the other so-called service clubs, as contributions merely to social progress within our chosen sphere; that we may view ourselves and our work in proper perspective; that we may never become complacent; that we may stand ready to face adversity or prosperity, war or peace; that our thoughts may never become crystallized; that we may ever continue to grow.
This is a changing world; we must be prepared to change with it.  The story of Rotary will have to be rewritten again and again.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

The teenager lost a contact lens while playing basketball in his driveway. After a fruitless search, he told his mother the lens was no where to be found.

Undaunted, she went outside and in a few minutes returned with the lens in her hand.

"How did you manage to find it, Mom?" the teenager asked.

"We weren't looking for the same thing," she replied. "You were looking for a small piece of plastic. I was looking for $150."

  1. Hello from Montego Bay, Jamaica.

I enjoyed your meeting. I was surprised at the information in the "Gangs in Paradise" video presentation.

I have a query, does the E-Club have a club banner like regular clubs? and if so, may we do a banner exchange?

Keep making Rotary accessible and fun!
