ABCs OF ROTARY (Cliff Dochterman)

Cliff Dochterman
RI President, 1992-93

The International Assembly

An International Assembly is held each year during February or March to prepare all of the district governors-elect from around the world for the office they will assume on 1 July.  Accompanied by their spouses, the incoming governors join a host of experienced Rotarian leaders for more than a week of training and motivational sessions.  At the assembly they meet the special Rotarian who will serve as RI president during their year as governors and they learn the RI theme for the coming year around which they will build their district's conference.

The first International Assembly was held in Chicago, Illinois, USA, in 1919.  Later assemblies were held in Lake Placid, New York; Boca Raton, Florida; and Nashville, Tennessee.  In recent years the assembly has been held in Anaheim, California.

Regardless of the venue, the message on the sign above the plenary hall has remained unchanged for years:  "Enter to learn...go forth to serve."

The District Assembly

In view of the annual turnover of Rotary leadership each year, special effort is required to provide the 33,000 club leaders with appropriate instruction for the tasks they will assume.  The annual district assembly is the major leadership training event in each Rotary district of the world.

The district assembly offers motivation, inspiration, Rotary information and new ideas for club officers, directors and key committee chairmen of each club.  Some of the most experienced district leaders conduct informative discussions on all phases of Rotary administration and service projects.

The assembly gives all participants valuable new ideas to make their club more effective and interesting.  Usually eight to ten delegates from each club are invited to attend the training session.

Another important feature of a district assembly is a review by the incoming district governor of the program theme and emphasis of the new RI president for the coming year.  District goals and objectives are also described and plans are developed for their implementation.

The success of each Rotary club is frequently determined by the club's full representation and participation in the annual district assembly.

SPEAKER - Take back your city with paint

Edi Rama has been in politics since the start of the 21st century, but before that he was a painter.

It was this deep affinity for light and color that informed Rama's time as mayor of Tirana, when he literally painted the town ... every color.

Rama is best known for the removal of government kiosks all over the city, thus cutting down on endemic bribery, and for the establishment of a modern new reception hall for citizens with paperwork requests. Rama's administration also demolished thousands of illegal buildings, removed hundreds of thousands of tons of concrete from riverbanks, and planted thousands of trees and bushes all over the city.

Rama continues to serve as a leader of the Socialist Party of Albania.

ROTARY'S ROLE as Part of our Community’s Character Development and Ethics

...from District 7150 - Even though this is relevant to District 7150, it can also be relevant to our E-Club.  The questions asked - about getting involved - certainly do relate to our E-club members!

Rotary really does have something special to contribute to the community in character development and ethics.

Is our club contributing as much as we should?  Whatever we do, Rotary will only be part of a larger effort made by parents, churches, schools, youth organizations such as scouting, and other entities.

Therefore, we need to know what these other players are doing and how Rotary clubs can work with them.

Ideally there would exist a community-wide organization which enabled all of us involved in ethics and character literacy to communicate with one another.

We have to rely on individual club members to identify opportunities to partner with other character building organizations.

Do you know of such an opportunity? If so, share that knowledge with the club.

Better yet, volunteer to organize a club project to seize that opportunity.

SPEAKER - Dare to educate Afghan girls

Shabana Basij-Rasikh was born and raised in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Under the Taliban, she dressed as a boy to escort her older sister to a secret school -- with dire consequences if they were caught.

She attended a high school in America under the YES exchange program, and graduated from Middlebury College in Vermont.

During college, she founded HELA, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering Afghan women through education. She also raised funds through foundations and public talks across the US to build a high school for girls in her ancestral village, and to build wells on the outskirts of Kabul to give communities access to clean drinking water.

An enthusiast of systemic change and community impact, Basij-Rasikh was selected as one of Glamour's Top 10 College Women of 2010, and was awarded the Vermont Campus Compact 2011 Kunin Public Award for outstanding public service, effective leadership and community-building.

Now, Shabana has joined 10×10 as a Global Ambassador, supporting a global action campaign that links nonprofits, corporations, philanthropists, policy leaders, global influencers and grassroots activists in a movement to support girls’ education. She is managing director of SOLA (School of Leadership, Afghanistan), a nonprofit that helps exceptional young Afghan women access education worldwide and jobs back home.

WHAT IS A ROTARY E-CLUB?

What is a Rotary E-Club?

Rotary E-Clubs are clubs that meet online. For many members, this new way of experiencing Rotary offers the benefits of a Rotary club, with added flexibility.

Other than meeting online to conduct club business, Rotary e-clubs are essentially the same as any other Rotary club.  Club members
  • carry out service projects,
  • support The Rotary Foundation, and
  • socialize and network with each other.
The main difference?    E-clubs are accessible 24/7.

Membership in Rotary E-Club.  Club members range from young professionals to retirees. E-clubs attract members who
  • live in different places throughout the year,
  • have family or work commitments,
  • travel frequently, or
  • have limited mobility.
Also, any Rotarian can make up a missed meeting by participating in an e-club online meeting.

The addition of Rotary e-clubs reflects the growth of online communities and the sheer number of Rotarians -- and potential new members -- who are already meeting and interacting online.

TO END OUR MEETING

To end our meeting, please recite aloud (on your honour!) the Rotary Four-Way Test of the things we think, say, and do.

Felix Stubbs, who will be our District Governor in 2015-16, leads us.

1.  Is it the TRUTH?
2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3.  Will it BUILD GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4.  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

...and official close of meeting
