ABCs OF ROTARY (Cliff Dochterman)

Cliff Dochterman
RI President, 1992-93

No Personal Privileges

Frequently, friends ask whether Rotarians receive special business benefits from their Rotary membership.  should Rotarians expect a special discount or some preferential service just because they are dealing with a fellow Rotarians?

The answer is clear "no."  The Rotary Manual of Procedure expressly states the Rotary position on this matter.  the policy, originally approved by the RI Board of Directors in 1933, is that in business and professional relations "a Rotarian should not expect, and far less should he ask for, more consideration or advantages from a fellow Rotarian than the latter would give to any other business or professional associate with whom he has business relations."

Over 50 years ago, the concept was expressed that "true friends demand nothing of one another, and any abuse of the confidence of friendship for profit is foreign to the spirit of Rotary."

On the other hand, if new or increased business comes as the natural result of friendship created in Rotary, it is the same normal development which takes place outside of Rotary as well as inside, so it is not an infriingement on the ethics of Rotary membership.

It is important to remember that the primary purpose of Rotary membership is to provide each memer with a unique opportunity to serve others, and membership is not intended as a means for personal profit or special privileges.

WHO IS CLIFF DOCHTERMAN?

CLIFF DOCHTERMAN BIOGRAPHY

Cliff Dochterman’s professional life included 40 years in higher education administration – 20 years each at the University of California in Berkeley and at the University of Pacific in Stockton, California

Most of us know him for his volunteer work for Rotary over the past 50 years.   He has served in almost every Rotary assignment in the world.  Here is a partial list:

  • Berkeley Rotary Club president (1963-64) [the Club's silver anniversary]
  • District 5160 Governor (1968-69)
  • University Hills Club President (1971-72) [1971 Charter President, RC of University Hills, CO, D5450]
  • Rotary International Director (1983-85
  • R.I. Vice President (1984-85)
  • President of Rotary International (1992-93)
  • Trustee and Chairman of The Rotary Foundation (1993-99)
  • ...and chairman of virtually every Rotary committee.

It has been said that Cliff has spoken before more Rotary Clubs than anyone in the world.

Cliff is the author of the booklet, “The ABCs of Rotary”, which has been translated into more languages than any other Rotary publication.  We use it to open every one of our meetings with the Rotary E-Club of the Caribbean, 7020 because of the enormous value of the information he provides.

Cliff has had a lifetime association with the Boy Scouts of America and has received three of the organization’s highest honors – the Distinguished Eagle, Silver Antelope, and Silver Beaver.  Cliff served as Chairman of Rotary’s Council on Legislation in 2001.  He has received The Rotary Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Service, the Distinguished Service Award and the Polio Plus Pioneer Award.

In l992-93 he became the world President of Rotary International.  He selected the theme, “Real Happiness Is Helping Others.”   Cliff has been honored by the heads of state of dozens of countries for spreading good will and world understanding.

Cliff and his wife, Mary Elena both belong to the Rotary Club of Moraga. Mary Elena has been president of the Moraga Rotary Club, Assistant District Governor and received Rotary’s Service Above Self Award.

SPEAKER -  Kelly McGonigal - Stress

Stress. It makes your heart pound, your breathing quicken and your forehead sweat. But while stress has been made into a public health enemy, new research suggests that stress may only be bad for you if you believe that to be the case. Psychologist Kelly McGonigal urges us to see stress as a positive, and introduces us to an unsung mechanism for stress reduction: reaching out to others.

Kelly McGonigal translates academic research into practical strategies for health, happiness and personal success.

Stanford University psychologist Kelly McGonigal is a leader in the growing field of “science-help.” Through books, articles, courses and workshops, McGonigal works to help us understand and implement the latest scientific findings in psychology, neuroscience and medicine.

Straddling the worlds of research and practice, McGonigal holds positions in both the Stanford Graduate School of Business and the School of Medicine. Her most recent book, The Willpower Instinct, explores the latest research on motivation, temptation and procrastination, as well as what it takes to transform habits, persevere at challenges and make a successful change.

She is now researching a new book about the "upside of stress," which will look at both why stress is good for us, and what makes us good at stress. In her words: "The old understanding of stress as a unhelpful relic of our animal instincts is being replaced by the understanding that stress actually makes us socially smart -- it's what allows us to be fully human."

"She is a leader driven by compassion and pragmatism."

"Every Rotarian and Example to Youth"

In much of the official literature of Rotary International relating to service to young people, a special slogan will be found - "Every Rotarian an Example to Youth."

These words were adopted in 1949 by the Rotary International Board of Directors as an expression of commitment to children and youth in each community in which Rotary clubs exist.  Serving young people has long been an important part of the Rotary program.

Youth service projects take many forms around the world.  Rotarians sponsor Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, athletic teams, handicapped children's centers, school safety patrols, summer camps, recreation areas, safe driving clinics, county fairs, child care centers and children's hospitals.  Many clubs provide vocational counseling, establish youth employment programs and promote use of the Four-Way Test.  Increasingly, drug and alcohol abuse prevention projects are being supported by Rotarians.

In every instance, Rotarians have an opportunity to be role models for the young men and women of their community. One learns to serve by observing others.  As our youth grow to become adult leaders, it is hoped each will achieve that same desire and spirit to serve future generations of children and youth.

The slogan accepted over 40 years ago is just as vital today.  It is a very thoughtful challenge - "Every Rotarian an Example to Youth."

SPEAKER - George Monbiot - Rewilding

Wolves were once native to the US' Yellowstone National Park -- until hunting wiped them out. But when, in 1995, the wolves began to come back (thanks to an aggressive management program), something interesting happened: the rest of the park began to find a new, more healthful balance. In a bold thought experiment, George Monbiot imagines a wilder world in which humans work to restore the complex, lost natural food chains that once surrounded us.

In his book "Feral," George Monbiot advocates the large-scale restoration of complex natural ecosystems.

In summer 2013, journalist and campaigner George Monbiot published Feral: Rewilding the Land, the Sea and Human Life. Part personal journal, part essay on natural science and wildlife (and on our own wild side), the book follows Monbiot's efforts to re-engage with nature. He shows how, by restoring and rewilding our damaged ecosystems on land and at sea, we can bring wonder back into our lives, and lays out a new, positive environmental vision, in which nature is allowed to find its own way.

After studying zoology at Oxford, Monbiot worked for the BBC’s natural history unit, making investigative environmental programs, one of which won a Sony Award. He left the BBC to spend six wild years in the tropics. Investigating the Indonesian transmigration program, he walked and canoed across West Papua, becoming lost in the forest, eating insects and rats to stay alive and being stung almost to death by hornets.

Investigating evictions in Brazil, he was beaten up by gunmen and nearly shot by military police. The radio program he made about his encounter with a police torturer in Maranhão was used for several years on the BBC’s health and safety training course - as an example of what not to do. Back in Britain, he founded the landrights campaign The Land Is Ours and started writing columns for the Guardian. His other books include Amazon Watershed, Captive State, The Age of Consent and Heat.

Szpilman is widely known as the protagonist of the 2002 Roman Polanski film The Pianist, which is based on the book "The Pianist" recounting his survival of the German occupation of Warsaw and the Holocaust.
